A unique blend of health therapies has just become accessible to the people of Taranaki.
Long-time acupuncture therapist, John Yuan, has combined skills with professional naturopath, Sara Nicholsen, to offer their clients the best of wellbeing worlds.
" A qualified naturopath is a professional provider of non-invasive therapies and natural medicines that aim to treat not just the symptoms of disease, but more importantly the underlying causes of any health condition' Sara explains.
Her practise - As Well As Well Can Be - provides nutritional analysis, nutrient testing, diet balancing, iridology, weight management programmes, Bowen technique, herbal medicine, homeopathy, flower essences, therapeutic yoga, detoxification, and Swedish therapeutic massage.
Sara uses nutritional analysis to indentify dietary deficiences and can then recommend a combination of food choices and supplements to correct those deficiences. She developed her passion medicine and therapies while living among indigenous people during her extended OE and returned to New Zealand in 1984 to complete a Diploma in Natural Therapeutics at the South Pacific College of Natural Therapeutics.
She has 25 years of clinical experience and is member of the NZ Society of Naturopaths.
Recognised qualifications are an assurance for clients of a high level of professional treatment, Sara says. Since gaining her diploma she has added a Bachelor of Education, a Diploma in Bowen Therapeutic Technique, a Certificate in Homeobotanical Therapy.
Consultations with Sara are covered by Southern Cross Insurance plans.
And, from the Orient, John Yuan graduated from university in his South China hometown in 1985 with a Bachalor degree in traditional Chinese medicine.
"Traditional medicine has been practiced there for 3000 years," he says, "and is still very popular among people there now."
John migrated to New Zealand in 1996, was accepted into the New Zealand Register of Acupuncturists in 1998, and began practicing in New Plymouth 12 years ago.
"By combining our two disciplines and skills, we will be able to refer people between us so that they get the best possible care, Sara adds. "As far as we know, we're the only clinic in the country that combines naturopathy and traditional Chinese medicine. " The best of both worlds. "
The New Zealand Register of Acupuncturists was incorporated as a society in 1977 to promote Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and acupuncture and to ensure the
highest standards of ethics and professionalism amongst its members. New members must have trained at colleges which require a minimum of
four (4) years of full time study in TCM, including Western anatomy, physiology and pathology as well as acupuncture. Members of the Register
have been trained at recognised places and/or have shown equivalent standards of proficiency through their clinical practice and by examination.
The New Zealand Register of Acupuncturists is comprised of a group of highly skilled practitioners who specialise in the field of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
The Register is a member of the World Federation of Acupuncture and Moxibustion Societies and is affiliated with the Australian Acupuncture and
Chinese Medicine Association Ltd.
All practising members are Registered ACC Treatment Providers.
